Planet

At Design Group UK, we are actively implementing measures to reduce our carbon footprint and enhance sustainability across our UK operations. From sourcing 100% of our electricity from renewable energy, to achieving and maintaining ISO 14001 certification, we are making tangible strides toward environmental responsibility. By prioritising renewable energy, waste reduction, and sustainable practices, we aim to protect our planet and preserve its resources for future generations.

Action plan

Design Group UK has successfully completed the phase 3 registration requirements for the Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS). Once the UK Government releases the relevant guidelines in March 2025, we will submit our ESOS Action Plan, which will outline our objectives and progress over the next three years. This plan will focus on energy reduction and efficiency savings, as well as the expansion of our recyclable waste streams and the use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, where feasible.

ESOS phase 3 aligns with the UK Government’s Sustainable Energy Resources for Consumers (SERC) program, which consolidates the company’s carbon footprint, encompassing all aspects of energy, fuel, and transport usage. This integrated approach will help us identify opportunities for further improvements, driving us toward a more sustainable future.

Planting trees

We have invested in the Woodland Trust to mitigate the impact of our business activities on the environment as part of our carbon management programme.

We have to date funded 29,250m2 of new native woodland in the UK to ensure that the CO2 emissions we create from our Domestic sea freight are absorbed from the atmosphere and stored by trees as they grow.

Improvements made to date

Zero landfill

It is now a legal requirement in Wales to ensure that no waste goes to landfill, and we are fully compliant at our Penallta site. In partnership with our waste contractor, Veolia, we ensure that all waste is separated internally in accordance with the Welsh Government guidelines. Additionally, we are committed to ensuring that no waste from our Newport Pagnell site goes to landfill.

Company pool cars

All Pool cars will be changed to Hybrid models in 2025 replacing the current diesel fleet.

Environmental management system

We have implemented an environmental management system at our manufacturing site in Wales which satisfies the requirements of BS ENISO 14001:2015.

Renewable energy sources

We ensure 100% of our electricity used to power our manufacturing site and warehouses is purchased from renewable sources.

Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme

We have implemented our ESOS activity (Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme) to actively reduce waste, promote recycling and sustainability.

ISO 14001

We have achieved and maintained the ISO 14001 Environmental standard with regular surveillance audits.

Environmental Training

All staff complete mandatory Environmental Awareness Training via our BrightSafe HSE system. This training is certified by RoSPA and CPD. Several of our staff have completed the ISO 14001 Environmental Auditing Qualification, or the ISO 14001 Environmental Lead Auditor Qualifications. To ensure competency, our HSE Manager has also completed the NEBOSH Environmental Management qualifications. This approach helps us to ensure that all environmental standards and obligations are adhered to.

Investment

We continue to consider investment in new machinery to improve our efficiency and capacity, allowing our customers to buy gift wrap locally.

Electric Charging Stations

Additional Electric charging stations have been installed at both our Penallta and Newport Pagnell sites, with more planned, enabling and encouraging staff to use electric cars.

LED lighting

We have continued our transition to LED lighting and the installation of high-speed doors to better segregate different areas of the factory, improving temperature regulation. By making these improvements, we are enhancing both our operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Reduced printing

We minimise the amount of printing taking place working with virtual files where possible.

Supporting sustainable choices

We support our employees to make sustainable choices, including offering segregated recycling points throughout all sites and providing electric car charging points.
